Choosing a Domain Name
|
What are we going to name it?
|
Choosing a domain name is an important part of your web strategy.
General guidelines:
1] Keep your domain as short as possible.
2] Choose a domain that is easy to spell and pronounce.
3] Don't be afraid of .ORG and .NET domains; they can be highly effective.
4] Consider registering two domain names of the same name. Example: seattleopera.COM and seattleopera.ORG. In this case, Seattle Opera is a non-profit arts organization, so the .ORG address is most appropriate. However, many web users are in the habit of typing .COM when they visit web sites. Having both .COM and .ORG prevents would-be visitors from being greeted with an error message.
Keep in mind that the domain name registration fees are the least expensive part of your overall web presence. Two domain names can add 25-50% to your total site traffic, all for the nominal cost of $15 per year.
5] If possible, choose your company name, such as seattleflowers.com. However, if your company name is Seattle Language Academy, you're better off selecting an easy to spell and pronounce alternative such as SEALANG.COM, as seattlelanguageacademy.com is quite long, and is susceptible to typos, leading to a 'site not found' error message. Of course, the goal is to make it as easy as possible for your visitors to locate your web site.
